On this World Soil Day, Mort & Co Fertilisers is thrilled to release results from its chickpea inoculation trial at the Grassdale site. By inoculating the Terrus Pro In-X granule, over the seed, there was an increase on the return on investment by nearly $400 per hectare. Senior Manager for Agronomy and Innovation, Maree Crawford said the soil types were variable across the whole site with pH ranging from 5.8 to 7.4.
“This result is validation on return on investment. Margins are being squeezed every year, and growers are constantly looking for new alternatives to mitigate the loss of those margins. The exciting thing about these trial results, is that this is a genuine solution for chickpea, mungbeans and pasture legumes.”

The latest trial data is proof the Terrus Pro In-X granule is a viable and sustainable method to increase rhizobia placement with legumes and pulses, and according to Maree Crawford, a win for both the grower and soils.

The differences in root biomass and quantity and quality of nodulation between inoculated seed and inoculated granule are evident.

Seed pods on the plants treated with inoculated granule are visibly larger with more trichomes (hairs) which are a form of natural pest control for the plant.

Other notable advantages of the inoculation on the granule over seed were: - Extra 3.2 plants per metre - 18 additional pods per plant - 337% more trichomes to protect and add atmospheric P into the soil - 24% more with dual peas in pods overall
“This is a legacy piece – with a strong advantage over straight seed application. Your crop is guaranteed an inbuilt food source with the carbon and humic acids, and because the granule is so porous the rhizobia can be imbibed into the granule, resulting in greater protection of the crop and continual improvement of the soil through the viability of microbes.”
